Juror Fay Gold is one of the most respected contemporary art experts in the country. Ms. Gold selects outstanding images from submissions entered by APG members. Deadline for entries is Sept. 5th. This show represents diverse works of over thirty photographers. The Atlanta Photography Group is a non-profit arts organization whose goal is to provide a resource center for photographers, to support and advance creative photography, and promote photography as a fine art. APG hosts critiques, discussions and meetings every month at the gallery. These monthly meetings provide members with opportunities to receive valuable feedback on their work, discuss photography with their peers, and increase their knowledge of the photographic medium.

Artist Lecture: Thu, Sep 24, 7pm - 8pm

The Notion of Family, Work by LaToya Ruby Frazier (b. 1983). Frazier's art explores her relationship with her family, similar to artists Doug Dubois and Leigh Ledare. The content, style, and immediacy of her work lead the viewer to assume she is documenting from the outside. In reality, Frazier is in front of the lens exposing her family and herself. Frazier is both content and photographer. Her work blurs the line between self-portraiture and social documentary. LaToya Ruby Frazier has been an artist in residence at Art Omi, The Center for Photography at Woodstock and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Her works have been exhibited at the National Academy Museum, The New Museum, Higher Pictures, Rush Arts Gallery and Schroeder Romero Gallery. She is currently exhibiting works at the Bronx Museum. Frazier is represented by Higher Pictures.

Showing concurrently with Frazier in the Documents: City Life exhibit are: Dawoud Bey, Paul D'Amato, Wayne Miller, and Malick Sidibe.

Alan Avery Art Company welcomes Dallas photographer Susan kae Grant to Atlanta for her first exhibition with the gallery. Her most recent body of work, “Night Journey,” is a multi-dimensional installation and suite of iris prints exploring the artistic interpretation of dreams, memory and the unconscious. It has been exhibited at thirteen venues and was included in the “International Biennale of Contemporary Art” in Florence, Italy.

ME, MYSELF & ME, an exhibition of Michael Childers’ lost portfolio of Andy Warhol will be showing in the front gallery. Many photographs were taken of the larger than life character, but rarely did Warhol sit for a photographer for images with such transparency into his soul. Childers’ images seem to capture the loneliness that lay deep and trapped hidden within, away from the paparazzi and the bright lights of stardom.

The gallery will also feature the mysterious work of local photographer Robert Gregory Griffeth. The mystery in Griffeth’s photographs is not only the haunting imagery, but also his synergetic process. Griffeth uses several pieces of negatives to create one powerful image.

Susan Harbage Page (b. 1959) will present and discuss her series "Postcards from Home." These lush, large format photographs of subjects dressed in KKK robes sewn from contemporary fabrics, such as a figured toile, seersucker, or Wal-Mart bags, explore how shared traumatic histories shape present-day social relations. Born in Ohio, she moved to North Carolina as a child. Being raised in the North and the South has informed her perspective and how her art addresses such concerns as the performance of race and gender and identity politics. Amongst Page's numerous awards are fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council, the Camargo Foundation, and the Fulbright Program.

Corey Daniels (b. 1951) creates large scale images based on friends, family and a lifelong collection of antique objects & oddities. Out of these he creates transformational still life compositions and portraits. Daniels' subjects transcend their everydayness through his direct approach to frame and composition and his sensitive use of natural light. His works urge the viewer to dwell in the moment of observation, in the mystery and ambiguity of a small slice of life. Concurrent with his large format photography, Daniels has been a successful abstract painter for 40 years. This is his first gallery exhibition in the South.

In her series, My Mother’s Clothes, Montgomery Barron has created a moving tribute to her mother, Eleanor Montgomery Atuk, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2002 and from which she later died in 2007. As she coped with her mother’s illness, Montgomery Barron created a tender portrait by capturing photographs of clothes, shoes, old date books and other objects important in her mother’s refined life in Atlanta.

Vincent Laforet is a New York and Los Angeles based photographer who is regularly commissioned to work on a variety of fine art, advertising, corporate and editorial projects. His approach to aerial photography has been singled out as one of the most unique and interpretive amongst photographers today.

At the age of 34, his work has been published in most major publications around the world and he has been sent on assignment by Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek and Life Magazine. In 2006, Laforet modified his staff position at The New York Times to become The Times’ first national contract photographer.

Vincent was recognized as one of the “100 Most Influential People In Photography” by American Photo Magazine in 2005 and was named one of the “30 Photographers To Watch Under 30” by PDN Magazine in 2002. He and four other photographers were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography for their post 9/11 coverage overseas in 2002. Vincent is a Canon Explorer of Light and Canon Printmaster. He has served as an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and the International Center of Photography.

Photographer and adventurer Paul Hagedorn exhibits images mostly from his latest visit to the Veneto region of Italy. Warm, romantic evenings and early mornings are captured and reproduced in cinematic, large format works that entice the observer to relax and enter these fact/fictional spaces created by the artist's eye. Hagedorn's unique use of encaustic on the photograph's surface give the artworks a mythical yet historical presence, a nod to the region's Renaissance era.

FINDING YOUR AUDIENCE:  An Introduction to Marketing Your Photographs
 
In this seminar, marketing consultant/educator Mary Virginia Swanson discusses the path toward connecting your work with your desired community.  
 
One of the most gratifying experiences for an artist is presenting their work to an appreciative audience.
 
Whether you wish to share your work with your local and regional communities, or take on the challenge of marketing at the national level, artists need to understand the most effective path to that audience.   
 
Swanson will discuss effective research to determine who will be receptive audiences and how to initiate and maintain a dialogue with those individuals to whom you wish to introduce your work.  Participants will learn how to effectively communicate their work in one-on-one meetings, appropriate industry gatherings, portfolio reviews and other events.  She will explain the importance of presenting a strong and consistent brand, having a presence in both print and online environments (including multimedia), and maintaining awareness of industry trends and market challenges for all audiences you wish to reach.  
 
This seminar is geared towards both to photographers who are beginning to promote their work, or those who are considering broadening their marketing to include new audiences for their photographs.
 
This event is free and open to the public.

ACP 11 Spotlight on Local Talent Presents Beth Lilly

Artist Lecture: Wed, Oct 21, 6:30pm - 8pm

ACP's Public Art Project "Gifted" will engage the public and transform Atlanta through the gift of 1,200 limited-edition, fine art photographs which will be distributed for free to the public during the month of October. Beth Lilly, the project's curator and organizer will discuss the project "Gifted", and how this project is infusing Atlanta with photography in an exciting, unpredictable way that directly impacts Atlantans within the flow of their daily lives. Lilly will discuss how exchange promotes local photographers while encouraging a rich dialogue about the act of giving valuable art for free as well as an oblique commentary on the current economy.

Tierney Gearon is best known for her highly acclaimed and publicized work I am a Camera, shown at the Saatchi gallery in 2001, followed by an early summer show at The Gagosian Gallery in New York. In 2006, her second major body of work, The Mother Project became the subject of a documentary film. A book of the exhibition, Daddy, where are you? was published later that year. Gearon's newest work is titled EXPLOSURE.

Exhibition: Thu, Nov 5 to Mon, Nov 30

Exhibited, collected, and published extensively around the world, Phil Bekker is widely recognized for his Polaroid work. This body of work has included transfer triptychs and heavily reworked 20" x 24" Polacolor transfers. The large cameras used to produce these pieces have been decommissioned and the photographic material is no longer in production.
Bekker was born in Rhodesia, Zimbabwe, and studied photography in South Africa and England. Later, Bekker moved to the United States where he received his MFA.
