Japan: Images from a Visual Journal
The Roswell Teahouse

Featuring work by: Jan Kapoor

Exhibition: Tue, Oct 6 to Sat, Oct 31

"The moon and sun are eternal travelers. Even the years wander on. A lifetime adrift in a boat, or in old age leading a tired horse into the years, every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home."

These words were written by the poet Basho some 500 years ago in his diary Oku no Hosomichi, Journey into the Far North.

I wrote this passage in the front of the journal I began when I traveled to Japan in October 2007; the words echoed in my mind as, at the beginning of my journey, I attempted to follow in Basho’s footsteps north to the temples of Motsuji and Chusonji, then on to Matsushima.

Every day was indeed a journey: into the past of a thousand years ago in Nara and Kyoto; into the timeless crafts of sumi ink and brush making; into a very special world of music and tea ceremony; into the 16th century world of a mountain village; and into the hyper-modern world of Tokyo and Shinjuku.

These images are a few of those that captured my eye and heart, a body of work that I have named Japan: Images from a Visual Journal.

Juxtaposed Generations: Images From Behind & In Front of the Lens

Gabriella Oviedo’s intimate images of her grandmother displays the vulnerability and often unseen angle that aging generally yields, while David Foster captures Ms. Oviedo using shadows and light to demonstrate how nature and the youthful form can be interwoven to create new landscapes. This juxtaposition of different styles of photography and generations lends a unique perspective on the cultural biases associated with beauty and aging in an honest and engaging manner.

Chi Peng: Journey to the West
Kiang Gallery

Featuring work by: Chi Peng

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 9 to Sat, Nov 21

Chi Peng, b.1980, is an internationally recognized artist, known for his surrealistic staged photographs.

Journey to the West is based on a 16thc. Chinese mythological fantasy about a monk accompanied by a monkey, a pig and a friar, who combat demons and dragons, on pilgrimage to the land of the Buddhists. The Monkey King, a boy who transforms himself into a magical monkey is the hero of the modern animated version, from which Chi Peng draws his inspiration,(not the ancient novel). The Monkey King is able to transformation himself into anything he imagines and defeats all enemies. Chi Peng uses the Photoshop to generate his magical images blending magical monkeys and monsters and Buddhas and modern settings together into formats reminiscent of ancient scroll paintings. They are made magical in content by the artist’s magical use of modern technology, the artist’s primary tool bringing the ancient story to life. Barbara Pollack says, “In his hands, the Journey to the West becomes the quintessential story of China today, ever changing and reinventing itself as a country venturing forward into the 21st century”.

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 10 to Sun, Nov 15

Margery Diamond, Photographer, presents Inside Vietnam, a photographic essay imaging the culture, geography, and charm of Vietnam today. Three weeks traveling throughout Vietnam opened her heart to an increased understanding of the Vietnamese people. Margery holds a B.S. in Education from Georgia State University and is GA certified with TSS and ESOL endorsement. She has studied with Showcase School of Photography, Charles Needle, and David Liebman. She is a member of Georgia Nature Photographer's Assoc. and Mosaic Outdoor Club of America.

Jo Ann Goldenburg continues her series on water reflections, which captures a painterly vision through photography. The collection features both abstract and traditional images. The combination of water and light provide her subject matter and give her photographs an impressionistic quality.

Jo Ann is an architectural photographer and works with numerous architects and designers in the Atlanta area. She holds a BFA in Journalism from Valdosta State University. ACP 11 Portfolio Lecture by Michelle Dunn Marsh
Grady High School

Featuring work by: Michelle Dunn Marsh

Artist Lecture: Sat, Oct 10, 5pm - 6pm

The publishing world has changed more in the last five years than in the previous five centuries; what does this mean to the segment that is photo book publishing? Michelle Dunn Marsh will discuss some of the joys and challenges in the process of making art books today, including insights on the investment publishers and museums make in each book, the importance in considering what makes a great book, not just a portfolio of photographs, the evolutionary stages from a few prints to a finished book and the years in between, the new opportunities in self-producing books, and most important, the eternal joy and critical importance of experiencing photography in book form.  Examples from a variety of books will be shown, and questions are most welcome.

Michelle Dunn Marsh is an advocate for photography and design. Affiliated with the Aperture Foundation since 1996, she currently serves as co-publisher of Aperture magazine, and develops photo-based book projects for other institutions and private clients as an award-winning book designer and as editor-at-large for Chronicle Books.

She has worked in publishing for 15 years in a variety of capacities, and has lectured nationally on art book design and publishing. Key books include a recent survey of rock and roll photographs selected by Graham Nash, and monographs by Catherine Chalmers, Carrie Mae Weems, Jock Sturges, Paul Strand, and Lino Tagliapietra, among many others. She holds an MS in Publishing from Pace University, and is on the advisory board to the Palm Springs Photo Festival and the Board of Governors for Bard College, where she received her bachelor's degree.
