CONTEMPORARY WOMEN: Self Reflections
Arts for All Gallery at VSA arts of Georgia

Featuring work by: Talia Azure, Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn, Emily Elkind, Rachel Evans, Katharine Hartwig Dahl, Erin Palovick

Exhibition: Tue, Aug 18 to Fri, Oct 23

What defines a woman of the twenty-first century? Rachel Evans is an Atlanta based artist and a SCAD-Atlanta graduate student who has explored such questions in her collaborative and community-oriented art endeavors during the past five years. Within our diverse society one common thread all people share is the impulse for creative expression. Working in collaboration with a variety of women with mental and physical disabilities, Ms. Evans’ goal is to share the stories of women who face the challenge of living with disability, and to raise public awareness in the community. Each participating artist creates a collaborative, mixed-media self-portrait, utilizing acrylics on canvas in combination with photographic processes. Each artist will also have the opportunity to create a statement to accompany her completed piece. This exhibit will challenge viewers to investigate their personal views and beliefs concerning women in American society, and the definition of disability in our culture. Art patrons will be offered insight into the lives, struggles and achievements of women with disabilities. The individual artists will have an opportunity to share their stories and creativity.

Palimpsest Portraits Neil Fried and Monica Duncan
Marcia Wood Gallery

Featuring work by: Monica Duncan, Neil Fried

Exhibition: Thu, Sep 10 to Sat, Oct 17

Neil Fried (Atlanta) and Monica Duncan (San Diego) present Palimpsest Portraits, a video project using a technique the artists have termed ‘encaustic video’. The traditionally linear format of the video process is altered by Duncan and Fried as they use a process wherein real-time image processing siphons off portions of the video stream into a reservoir of computer memory that either fades of fixes, according to degrees of luminosity in the scene. Like the palimpsest, some areas must be rubbed out to admit the new, but are never totally lost. The video portraits to be presented in Palimpsest Portraits are the initial stage of larger project that will culminate in a video piece wherein the characters inhabit architectural forms in site-specific, interactive performance in a city that resembles Atlanta.

Exhibition Opening Reception: Thu, Sep 10, 7pm - 9pm

Other: Fri, Oct 2, 7pm - 12am

Dreams & Tempests: Photographs by Benjamin Rusnak
Art Institute of Atlanta Gallery

Featuring work by: Benjamin Rusnak

Exhibition: Tue, Sep 29 to Sat, Oct 31

Geography and weather, drought and flash flood, oppressive heat and oppressive poverty govern the lives of the poor in the tropics. The postcard landscapes that tourists may think of as an idyllic paradise can become deadly for families in mud-and-stick homes clinging precariously to steep hillsides. Benjamin Rusnak’s photographs show the inner strength of people caught between the forces of nature and economics whose faith and hope transcend the daily struggle to secure the necessities of life. His use of panoramic photography, showing close and distant views simultaneously, creates not only landscapes but intimate “peoplescapes,” a shared experience between subject and viewer.

Benjamin Rusnak has documented poverty in the Caribbean and Latin America for Food For The Poor, an international relief and development agency, for the past nine years. Previously, he spent 10 years as a newspaper and wire photojournalist with Agence France-Presse, the Indianapolis Star, the Fort Myers News-Press and the Ann Arbor News. His work has won numerous awards, including Pictures of the Year International, Best of Photojournalism, New York Photo Awards, International Photography Awards, Photo District News, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, and the Gordon Parks Award.

Visiting Artist Lecture: Benjamin Rusnak

Benjamin Rusnak has documented poverty in the Caribbean and Latin America for Food For The Poor, an international relief and development agency, for the past nine years. Previously, he was a newspaper and wire photojournalist for 10 years, working for Agence France-Presse, the Indianapolis Star, the Fort Myers News-Press and the Ann Arbor News.

His work has been recognized by Pictures of the Year International, Best of Photojournalism, New York Photo Awards, International Photography Awards, Photo District News, Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, Alexia Foundation and the China International Press Photo Contest. In 2008, Rusnak tied himself for first place to win the prestigious Gordon Parks Award. In 2005, the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in Delray Beach (FL) featured a solo exhibition of his work.

Zuma Press represents his work, and zReportage.com and DOUBLEtruck Magazine often feature his essays.

Rusnak grew up in suburban Washington, D.C., where he developed an interest in topics beyond American borders and a passion for the plight of those less fortunate. He graduated from George Mason University in 1992, with a degree in communication. He lives in Boca Raton, Fla., with his wife and fellow newspaper refugee, Susan Bryant.

Joel Leivick: In the Garden
Emory Visual Arts Gallery

Featuring work by: Joel Leivick

Exhibition: Thu, Oct 1 to Fri, Nov 20

Intimate, sensual and complex, celebrated California-based photographer Joel Leivick’s new work looks into the enticements that gardens hold out—that in cultivating nature we might desist from conquering it, and in ordering it we might grasp its true wildness, even make its creativity our own. Leivick’s photographs are at once precise descriptions, luminous observations, and sharp acts of contemplation. To really see a garden, Leivick suggests, is to find a more remarkable garden within—a garden always on the verge of its own conception, continuously in full bloom, and already remembered.

Night Journey:
Installation and Images
Alan Avery Art Company

Featuring work by: Michael Childers, Susan kae Grant, Robert Gregory Griffeth

Exhibition: Thu, Oct 1 to Tue, Nov 3

Alan Avery Art Company welcomes Dallas photographer Susan kae Grant to Atlanta for her first exhibition with the gallery. Her most recent body of work, “Night Journey,” is a multi-dimensional installation and suite of iris prints exploring the artistic interpretation of dreams, memory and the unconscious. It has been exhibited at thirteen venues and was included in the “International Biennale of Contemporary Art” in Florence, Italy.

ME, MYSELF & ME, an exhibition of Michael Childers’ lost portfolio of Andy Warhol will be showing in the front gallery. Many photographs were taken of the larger than life character, but rarely did Warhol sit for a photographer for images with such transparency into his soul. Childers’ images seem to capture the loneliness that lay deep and trapped hidden within, away from the paparazzi and the bright lights of stardom.

The gallery will also feature the mysterious work of local photographer Robert Gregory Griffeth. The mystery in Griffeth’s photographs is not only the haunting imagery, but also his synergetic process. Griffeth uses several pieces of negatives to create one powerful image.

Exhibition Opening Reception: Thu, Oct 1, 6pm - 9pm

Work by Susan Harbage Page
Hagedorn Foundation Gallery

Featuring work by: Susan Harbage Page

Exhibition: Thu, Oct 1 to Thu, Oct 29

Susan Harbage Page (b. 1959) will present and discuss her series "Postcards from Home." These lush, large format photographs of subjects dressed in KKK robes sewn from contemporary fabrics, such as a figured toile, seersucker, or Wal-Mart bags, explore how shared traumatic histories shape present-day social relations. Born in Ohio, she moved to North Carolina as a child. Being raised in the North and the South has informed her perspective and how her art addresses such concerns as the performance of race and gender and identity politics. Amongst Page's numerous awards are fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council, the Camargo Foundation, and the Fulbright Program.

Featuring work by: Corey Daniels

Exhibition: Thu, Oct 1 to Thu, Oct 29

Corey Daniels (b. 1951) creates large scale images based on friends, family and a lifelong collection of antique objects & oddities. Out of these he creates transformational still life compositions and portraits. Daniels' subjects transcend their everydayness through his direct approach to frame and composition and his sensitive use of natural light. His works urge the viewer to dwell in the moment of observation, in the mystery and ambiguity of a small slice of life. Concurrent with his large format photography, Daniels has been a successful abstract painter for 40 years. This is his first gallery exhibition in the South.

ACP 11 Public Art Project - "Gifted"
Various Locations

Featuring work by: Corinne Adams, David Walter Banks, John Bohannon, William Boling, Diane Kirkland, Kathryn Kolb, Lynn Marshall-Linnemeier, Pam Moxley, Laura Noel, Dorothy O'Connor, Christian Bradley West, Michael West

Exhibition: Thu, Oct 1, 12am

ACP is pleased to announce that Atlanta-based photographer and artist Beth Lilly has been selected by a panel of jurors to create ACP's Public Art Project for ACP 11. Her project, “Gifted”, will engage the public and transform Atlanta through the gift of 1,200 limited-edition, fine art photographs which will be distributed to the public for free during the month of October.

Beth Lilly has curated a collection of twelve photographs from participating local photographers and with oversight from the artists, created limited-edition prints (100 of each photograph, totaling 1200 prints). These artworks will be handed out free, as gifts to the public, throughout the Atlanta metro region during the ACP festival in October, in unexpected places, at unannounced times. The dates and locations for obtaining a free print will not be disclosed in advance (but you may want to keep an eye on twitter to find out when the Gifted team hits the street).

Selected from a competitive open call for proposals, Beth Lilly's project was most suited to ACP's public art mission, to infuse Atlanta with photography in an exciting, unpredictable way that directly impacts Atlantans within the flow of their daily lives. Lilly's project is also an attempt to find and cultivate new appreciators of photography and the photographic print, by providing a professionally-printed "starter print" for a potential collector. The exchange will promote local photographers while encouraging a rich dialogue about the act of gifting valuable art for free, as well as an oblique commentary on the current economy.

Photographers participating in this project include: Corinne Adams, David Walter Banks, William Boling, John Bohannon, Christian Bradley West, Diane Kirkland, Kathryn Kolb, Lynn Marshall-Linnemeier, Pam Moxley, Laura Noel, Dorothy O’ Connor, & Michael West.

To follow the progress and results of ACP 11’s Pubic Art Project, please visit gifted.acpinfo.org. ACP's Public Art project will also be featured in "Spotlight on Local Talent: Beth Lilly.

Special Thanks to John Dean.

The ACP panel of public art jurors included Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the High Museum, Jeffrey Grove, independent curator Lisa Kurzner; current ACP Board President Louis Corrigan; Art Papers Board President, Peter Bahouth, and Executive Director of ACP, Amy Miller.

ACP 11 Opening Reception - Le Flash
Castleberry Hill District

Featuring work by: Various Artists

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 2, 7pm - 12am

Organized by Cathy Byrd and Stuart Keeler

Once a year, Paris lights up the city with art for Nuit Blanche. Toronto does the same with all night art revelry. In Santa Monica, Glow transforms the pier, the beach and Palisades Park for art encounters from dusk to dawn.

For the second year in a row, Le Flash Atlanta will feature over 40 projects in Castleberry Hill’s streets and galleries, vacant lots and windows, warehouses and rooftops.

Fantastical art and creative events will again fill a night out in the neighborhood. Atlanta will be showered with the light and sound of installations, performance art, poetry readings, music, video projections ands other lens-based projects, an iron pour and art happenings of all sorts.

The event will illuminate the district from dusk to midnight, creating a unique cultural experience, and leaving a trace of magic and mystery in the minds of those who see it.

This event is free and open to the public.

Beyond the Glance…the Legacy of Carol's Vision
Tower Gallery

Featuring work by: Carol Hendon

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 3 to Sat, Oct 31

At the tender age of 12 Carol Hendon's heart was stolen. Not by the boy next door, or the latest teen idol, but by the Kodak Instamatic. From that moment on the medium of photography and the power of the still image fascinated her.

Carol thrived on using the camera's lens to reveal images that might otherwise be overlooked or go unseen. She cultivated her craft on film, yet embraced the digital age of photography. Melding film and technology in her digital darkroom, Carol explored the multi-layers of her creative vision. On October 29, 2008, following a two-year battle with esophageal and lung cancer, Carol, 54, passed away at home surrounded by love and the photos that live on as a tribute to her talent.

It is the hope of Don Shomaker, her beloved partner of 23 years, that through showing her works Carol's unique vision will live on inspiring others to look past the obvious to the beauty that surrounds them.

Whether shooting an intimate portrait, a celebration, the beauty of nature or a product for marketing, Carol invited her audience take a moment and go beyond a glance to find something in her photographs that moved their spirit.

Established in 1998, Atlanta Celebrates Photography supports Atlanta's emergence as an international center for photography. Through an annual October festival and year-round programs, ACP seeks to nurture and support photographers, educate and engage collectors, promote diverse photography venues, and enrich Atlanta's cultural scene. Through these efforts, we facilitate Atlanta's emergence as a world-class cultural city.
