The Glass Ceiling
Hagedorn Foundation Gallery
Featuring work by: Jill Greenberg

Exhibition: Wed, Oct 26, to Fri, Dec 30 2011

Fashion, voyeurism, and cultural critique: daring experimental portraitist Jill Greenberg’s new series is powerful work about the female in society today. Her subjects – female athletes and dancers - appear underwater in beautiful pools engaged in a variety of ambiguous, dynamic movements. Wearing colorful bathing suits and high heels in complimentary hues, they urge one to question the how and why of their presentation.

In 2008, Greenberg was commissioned for a commercial fashion shoot with the US Olympic Synchronized Swim Team, which included two setups calling for high heels. The artist was struck by the absurdity of the styling and how objectified these talented women were. The stilettos, meant to heighten sexuality, in reality restricted movement and imposed a lack of control. In reaction to this shoot, Greenberg returned to her earlier interest in feminist art and created the Glass Ceiling series. Her swimmers, wearing beautiful but encumbering heels seem trapped underwater by their very stylishness. Eerily seductive, Greenberg’s work depicts the tension of her models coming to the surface for air while wrestling with the weight of the water as a metaphor for our culture’s demands for feminine role play and women’s struggle to assert themselves.
