Featuring work by: Ruth Dusseault

Exhibition: Wed, Oct 17, to Sat, Dec 1 2012

Atlanta artist Ruth Dusseault examines the development of our country’s tourist industry in the early 20th c.. Her work reveals the ironic relationship between utopian and dystopian realities the built environment creates.

In this largely unseen body of work, the artist focuses on idiosyncratic structures and inventions designed by amateurs and entrepreneurs in the Thirties and Forties for tourist attractions. The work is exhibited in over-sized Cibachrome panoramas reminiscent of the highway billboards which advertised these sites. The architecture and design relics documented reveal an innocent disregard for our environment integral to everyday life at the outset of the 20th century: structures of coral, taxidermy of endangered animals, backdrops for animal display cages. Today, these over the top trappings of “attraction” would be disparaged as threatening to our global health.

Dusseault’s nostalgic images feature a medley of amusing and often mystical devices that popularized a particular kind of engagement with nature. Developers selected features of the local landscape and reconfigured them to depict an eternal, ethereal world frozen in time. This work reflects on our use and misuse of the landscape and world resources in search of amusement and industrial profitability.
