ACP Public Art: THE FENCE
Atlanta Beltline's Eastside Trail

Exhibition: Fri, Aug 15, to Sat, Nov 1 2014

This acclaimed ACP program typically features temporary projects in a variety of diverse locations throughout Atlanta. It is significant in its ability to reach beyond the audience of traditional art venues and for its ability to expand the way its audience considers and perceives photography and “lens-based” media.

This year ACP is bringing THE FENCE project to Atlanta in a 1st-time partnership between ACP, United Photo Industries (of NY) and the Atlanta BeltLine. The Fence 2014 is an outdoor exhibition of images juried from an international call for entries. This year the FENCE will be simultaneously exhibited in three locations: Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York, NY; Rose F. Kennedy Greenway in Boston, MA; and on The Atlanta Beltline, where there'll be a 600-foot long installation!

Gallery L1 presents Ansley West Rivers and Wenxin Zhang
Gallery L1
Featuring work by: Ansley West Rivers, Wenxin Zhang

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 4, to Thu, Oct 30 2014

Ansley West Rivers and Wenxin Zhang both received her MFA at California College of the Arts. West's series, Racquet and Rose will be exhibited with Zhang's Beast by the Waterfall Guesthouse. In two unique styles their work explores dream space, memory, fears and connections between emotion and place. Zhang creates non-linear photographic novels. In her writings and photography, she describes her experiences of growing up in China, her current life in San Francisco, and her personal relationships. West explores the confusion of time and space. Shooting with a 4x5 film camera her work of layered and distorted portraiture as well as images of the deep south capture a history that lies just beyond reach or understanding. The blurred photographic record has roots in both the physical and emotional landscapes. West's work is influenced by the writings of Roland Barthes and his description of photography as a medium uniquely capable of expressing loss is a perfect way to describe this stunning and surprisingly emotional exhibition.

Opening Reception: Thu, Oct 9, 5pm - 10pm

Creole World

Creole World is a complex, multi-layered photo essay linking New Orleans, which is frequently referred to as "the northernmost Caribbean city", with its cultural kin further south. The similarities are quite striking and at times even uncanny. There are photographs of many urban places and neighborhoods that are difficult to travel to and photograph in, such as El Chorrillo in Panama City, Panama, a poor neighborhood adjacent to Casco Viejo within the historic district of Panama City. Due to the US embargo, Cuba is inaccessible to Americans as a tourist destination and over the last half-century has become a "forbidden island" to US citizens. Richard Sexton traveled to and photographed not only in Havana, but throughout Cuba, in Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Santa Clara, Santiago de Cuba, and other locales. The culmination of these travels has resulted in Creole World, which immerses the reader in an exotic world they would never be able to see on their own.

Artists Talk: Sat, Nov 22, 2pm - 5pm

Artist Talk and Book Signing

Exhibiting artist Richard Sexton will lead a discussion of his process and sign copies of his recent publication Creole World.
