Gallery L1 presents Ansley West Rivers and Wenxin Zhang
Gallery L1
Featuring work by: Ansley West Rivers, Wenxin Zhang

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 4, to Thu, Oct 30 2014

Ansley West Rivers and Wenxin Zhang both received her MFA at California College of the Arts. West's series, Racquet and Rose will be exhibited with Zhang's Beast by the Waterfall Guesthouse. In two unique styles their work explores dream space, memory, fears and connections between emotion and place. Zhang creates non-linear photographic novels. In her writings and photography, she describes her experiences of growing up in China, her current life in San Francisco, and her personal relationships. West explores the confusion of time and space. Shooting with a 4x5 film camera her work of layered and distorted portraiture as well as images of the deep south capture a history that lies just beyond reach or understanding. The blurred photographic record has roots in both the physical and emotional landscapes. West's work is influenced by the writings of Roland Barthes and his description of photography as a medium uniquely capable of expressing loss is a perfect way to describe this stunning and surprisingly emotional exhibition.

Opening Reception: Thu, Oct 9, 5pm - 10pm

Confessions for a Son

The latest culmination of McNair Evan's projects, "Confessions for a Son" combines the artists photographs with images taken by his father and found by McNair in his journey for answers, as well as reinterpreted paraphernalia such as displaced checks collected from his father's insolvent business and printed like sacred negatives through a mural enlarger. All of the pieces coalesce in an empathetic portrait of a man and an emotionally complex family heritage. Opening reception on Oct. 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
