Animalia: Photographs by Anne Berry
The Lamar Dodd Art Center
Featuring work by: Anne Berry

Exhibition: Mon, Aug 18, to Mon, Nov 10 2014

Anne’s photography of animals “vehemently avoids the high resolution color aesthetic of zoological photography, opting instead for a gaze evocative of early pictorialists, who strived to render the photographic distinctly unscientific and launched the then novel medium of photography into the realm of fine art. Within Berry’s jarringly ghostly and ethereal tones, each subject reveals a soulfulness so often hidden in photographs of animals; their struggle is urgently expressionistic, spiritual, dignified, and human”(Ellyn Ruddick-Sunstein, The Plight of Primates in Captivity, Beautiful Decay, 02/28/14).

This exhibit will feature animal portraits from the south and around the world. Behind Glass is a series of photographs and wet plate collodian tintypes made in monkey houses of small mostly European zoos. Also on exhibit are Anne’s photographs and photogravures of southern animals: wild, feral, and domesticated.

Aviation Community Cultural Center
Featuring work by: Linda Costa Cheranichit

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 24, to Fri, Feb 20 2015

As part of their Passport to the Arts series The Aviation Community Cultural Center presents their second ever photographic exhibition, "Transcend", the newest body of work by Brazilian born light painting photographer Linda Costa Cheranichit. Here the Atlanta based artist tackles complex memories and emotions connected to flight and her life experience of immigrating to the USA as a child with only her mother and brother, leaving her father and other family behind. Coming to America via plane at the age of 9 without returning until she was 16, the photographer uses her distinct memories of leaving and returning home to explore emotions ranging from longing to fulfillment, sorrow to elation, through her particular light painted long exposure photographs. Her unique light paintings evoke magic and their colorful bold effects are born the moment each photograph is created via special lighting techniques, not cooked up in Photoshop. By delving into the imagery and fantasy of her work the artist seeks to heal herself and others who have tasted the double edged predicament of feeling joy in returning to one's homeland and culture, only to suffer the pain each time of leaving your loved ones behind once more.

ACP Spotlight Presents: An Evening With the Bitter Southerner
Big Studio
Featuring work by: Aaron Coury, Amanda Greene, Zach Wolfe

Panel Discussion: Fri, Oct 24, 7pm - 8:30pm

An important goal for ACP is to help Atlanta retain the artistic talent that the city fosters. ACP's Spotlight Series seeks to give these photographers and photo-industry stars greater exposure.

For the last year, The Bitter Southerner has been publishing "Great Stories from the South" every Tuesday morning. Working with local photographers, they present a slice of the South that's as familiar as it is revelatory. As part of ACP's effort to highlight Atlanta-based photographers, An Evening With The Bitter Southerner will weave together great people, fascinating stories, and fine photography.

On October 24th, local photographers Aaron Coury, Amanda Greene and Zach Wolfe will talk about their photographs, there will be refreshing beverages shared, and when it comes right down to it, we can't wait for you to join us all at Big Studio.
