Did You See That?! Stories of Urban Oddities
Spruill Gallery
Featuring work by: Steve Steinman

Exhibition: Fri, Aug 22, to Sat, Oct 25 2014

Did you see that?! features photographs from Atlanta artist Steve Steinman dictating a subtle commentary on the anomalies often missed in everyday life. From the odd attraction on the side of a highway to street performers; from public art to the delicate beauty found in architecture, Steinman captures evolving lifestyles present in the unnoticed and overlooked people, places and things that have become a part of our lives.

Spruill Gallery will host an Artist's Talk in conjunction with Did you see that?! on Saturday, September 27 at 1pm. Steve Steinman will share what inspires him in the creation of his pictorial urban tales, including his use of contemporary technologies to create photographs that serve as both historical evidence and conveyers of art and passion.

The Spruill Gallery is a part of the Spruill Center for the Arts, a private, non-profit organization offering an extensive and diverse program of art classes for all ages and skill levels. The Spruill Gallery provides quarterly professional artist exhibition series, special events and a local artisan gift shop. Opening Reception: Fri, Sep 26, 6pm - 9pm

Exhibition: Fri, Sep 26, to Sat, Nov 8 2014

Family as the Vernacular

Through their alternative image structures, Margaret Hiden, Libby Rowe, and H. Jennings Sheffield utilize vernacular imagery to convey an understanding of iconic experiences. These familiar encounters and interactions provoke viewers to make references to their own memories and experiences that are already a part of a culturally collective consciousness.

Hiden's series "15 Glen View Circle" explores themes of presence, absence, passage and memory, as well as the photograph's cultural role as visual validation of one's existence. In "(sub)Division", Rowe seeks to question societal identity through the exploration of the preconceived and perceived intimacy of ?the neighborhood?. H. Jennings Sheffield's series "Tethered" investigates the tethering-effect we experience everyday by portraying a 24-hour period of time during different days of the week as she attempts to balance different roles, interactions, and responsibilities throughout the week.

There will be an exhibition opening on Friday, September 26, 2014 from 6pm-9pm.

Horizons and Intersections

This exhibit features a series of black and white and minimal color landscapes from the western U.S., layered to create immediate depth and to suggest infinite distance. These photos, often taken through a car window while whizzing past southwestern deserts and northern forests, form a complex image fused by merging digital photos into one visual frame. This is time collapsed, an "all at once" view of a sequence of images of the same horizon---images that change only with the photographer's position.
