Opening Reception: Fri, Sep 26, 6pm - 9pm

Exhibition: Fri, Sep 26, to Sat, Nov 8 2014

Family as the Vernacular

Through their alternative image structures, Margaret Hiden, Libby Rowe, and H. Jennings Sheffield utilize vernacular imagery to convey an understanding of iconic experiences. These familiar encounters and interactions provoke viewers to make references to their own memories and experiences that are already a part of a culturally collective consciousness.

Hiden's series "15 Glen View Circle" explores themes of presence, absence, passage and memory, as well as the photograph's cultural role as visual validation of one's existence. In "(sub)Division", Rowe seeks to question societal identity through the exploration of the preconceived and perceived intimacy of ?the neighborhood?. H. Jennings Sheffield's series "Tethered" investigates the tethering-effect we experience everyday by portraying a 24-hour period of time during different days of the week as she attempts to balance different roles, interactions, and responsibilities throughout the week.

There will be an exhibition opening on Friday, September 26, 2014 from 6pm-9pm.

FRONTIERS
Further Polycontemporary
Featuring work by: Sandrine Arons

Closing Reception: Fri, Sep 26, 6:30pm - 9:30pm

Frontiers offers a visual representation of the artist's experience of multiculturalism, depicting an inner world of multiple languages, religions and cultural landscapes embedded in the mind as fragmented memories in search of wholeness. Growing up between France and the United States with frequent travels worldwide greatly influenced her vision and understanding of the world. Culturally, she is French, American, Algerian; raised among Jews, Atheists and southern Baptists; married to a Muslim and the mother of child who will carry all these cultures with him into a new generation. Feeling that she fits into multiple molds of culturally defined identities, she often considers herself more of an observer than a participant; revising, editing and melting into the landscape. When home is everywhere and nowhere there is an incessant mental revision that makes reality ambiguous and the search for coherence becomes an instinctual reconstruction of memory through the fusion of place and time. In this series, Sandrine makes use of her camera and digital composition to bring these worlds together. www.sandrinearons.com
