Manipulated
Gallery See - SCAD Atlanta
Featuring work by: Kim Anno, Radcliffe Bailey, Christopher Bucklow, Chuck Close, Dan Estabrook, Abelardo Morell, Richard Mosse, Mariah Robertson, Alison Rossiter, V. Elizabeth Turk

Exhibition: Tue, Sep 3, to Fri, Dec 27 2013

"Manipulated" features the innovative work of 10 contemporary artists who use experimental and often alternative studio and darkroom processes to expand the expressive possibilities and structure of making photographs.

As digital cameras have steadily replaced film over the past decade, Photoshop and other editing tools have made photograph "processing" a largely computer-aided activity devoid of direct manipulation by the artist’s hand. The recent revival of more labor-intensive traditional and avant-garde techniques, such as camera obscura, photograms, silver gelatin and Van Dyke prints, attests to an energized state of expression in contemporary photography and its creative potential to merge with drawing, collage, painting and installation.

The artists in "Manipulated" explore this fertile new ground in image making and, in the process, are directly influencing the future direction of conceptual photography.

Exhibition curated by Alexandra Sachs, Assistant Curator, SCAD Atlanta.

Talk & Reception

Please join SCAD Exhibitions Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 6 PM for the Manipulated artist panel discussion including three artists featured in the exhibition: Brooklyn-based photographer, Dan Estabrook; Atlanta-based artist, Radcliffe Bailey; and SCAD Atlanta photography department professor, V. Elizabeth Turk; along with Dr. Emily Webb, SCAD Atlanta art history professor and moderated by Alexandra Sachs, Assistant Curator, SCAD Exhibitions. The panel will discuss how a recent revival of more labor-intensive traditional and avant-garde techniques, such as camera obscura, photograms, silver gelatin and Van Dyke prints, attests to an energized state of expression in contemporary photography and its creative potential to merge with drawing, collage, painting and installation.

The exhibition and panel discussion are held in conjunction with Atlanta Celebrates Photography 2013, and will be followed by a reception from 7-8 PM. The exhibition, event and reception are free and open to the public.

It's a Beautiful Moment, When the Day is Born: Photographs from the South of France
Alliance Francaise d'Atlanta
Featuring work by: Jennifer Braden, Emily Harris, Matt King, Yvonne Lu, Holly Schumacher, Leah Valle, Xiwen Zhu

Opening Reception: Fri, Nov 1, 7pm - 9pm

Nestled among the hills of the Provence region in the South of France is Lacoste. It’s the type of secluded, picturesque mountain village one expects to read about in books or see in the movies. It’s charm is undeniable, and there is an equivocal kindness on the faces of the people who live there. Lacoste is steeped in history; its oldest building, Maison Forte, dates back to the 9th century. This rich lineage is visible around every turn of its cobblestone streets. In the fall of 2012 a group of students in the MFA program at the Savannah College of Art & Design had the opportunity of a lifetime. They were given the chance to live in the village, meet the locals, soak up the ambience, and fully embrace their new surroundings. The photographs in this exhibition are the proof of these experiences. They celebrate French culture and serve to remind us all what is out there in the world once we step out of our front doors. Artist talk at 7:30.
