Monika Sziladi

Ready for My Close-up
Hagedorn Foundation Gallery
Featuring work by: Double Zero, Jill Frank, Mónika Sziládi

Exhibition: Thu, Sep 12, to Fri, Oct 25 2013

In the last half-century, feminism and performativity have influenced contemporary photography more than any other cultural markers. The exhibition title is taken from the exit line of Sunset Boulevard, a film which questions female identity issues, the rehearsal of the self, the gaze of the viewer and the use of the theatrical to command attention, all influenced by culture and all features of this group exhibition.

Double Zero - the collective duo of Hannah Ireland and Annie Vought - investigates how identity is shaped in interpersonal relationships. Their video Cha cha cha changes – and its accompanying still portraiture - document modes of presentation and the performance of the self using simple domestic materials, as the artists recreate each other as sculptures.

Atlanta artist Jill Frank bases her work on the American ideal of romance. Her subject/performers act out gestures of intimacy that resonate in our iconic media framework. The work challenges the industry driven “optimism commodity” of romance.

Monika Sziladi’s seamless collaged photographs investigate the tribalized social sphere of public relations, networking, trade shows and social meet ups: wherever individuals have folded everyday living into a masquerade of the extraordinary. Her images assert that attendance in this society is performance.

When I Turn My Head
Hagedorn Foundation Gallery
Featuring work by: Steffani Jemison

Exhibition: Thu, Sep 12, to Fri, Oct 25 2013

“If the sky is above my head, when I turn my head upwards, I will see the sky,” activist Huey P. Newton, whose words evoke both possibility and futility.

Steffani Jemison is an interdisciplinary artist whose work considers issues that arise when conceptual practices are inflected by black history and vernacular culture. Jemison uses rigorous formal methods to explore her interests in the politics of serial form, the limits of narrative description, and the tension between improvisation, repetition, and fugitivity. Jemison’s solo exhibition includes two videos and a set of inkjet prints on clear film.

Her regenerated photographs employ acetate as support so that the coherent photograph appears solid, but is translucent, thus reflecting other works, the architecture of the room, and the viewers themselves. They are both “in transit” and “at rest.”

Similarly challenging the meaning or stability of the visual trope, Jemison’s videos, which reference early chase films, show figures moving repetitively through urban landscapes in various iterations.

In a May, 2013’s Art in America. Thomas J. Lax writes that Jemison’s videos reveal “the context-sensitive and research-oriented processes that structure the artist’s work across photo-based objects and text-based images, performance and participatory projects alike”…carry[ing] an unexpected affective charge.”

Imprint
The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur
Featuring work by: Linda Lyons, Gray Lyons

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 4, to Fri, Nov 29 2013

An imprint is an impression. It is a remnant of or signifier for a thing that is no longer present. A physical imprint is a permanent mark on the landscape. An encounter or experience leaves a mark on the landscape of memory in a way that feels no less real. Identity is influenced by not only things present, but by things gone. These images refer to a selection of objects, memories and experiences that no longer exist, but continue to exert influence.
