Posing Beauty in African American Culture
Spelman College Museum of Fine Art
Featuring work by: Thomas Askew, Sheila Pree Bright, Mikalene Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems

Exhibition: Thu, Sep 5, to Sat, Dec 7 2013

"Posing Beauty in African American Culture," which was curated by Dr. Deborah Willis, one of the nation’s leading historians of African American photography, features more than 75 photographs by leading, emerging, and amateur photographers. It explores the ways in which our contemporary understanding of beauty has been informed by photographers working from 1890 to the present.

"Posing Beauty" does not define beauty. Instead, it considers the idea of black beauty in photography—how it is posed, constructed, imagined, reviewed, critiqued, and contested in art, the media, and everyday culture. This groundbreaking project is rooted in the belief that beauty is empowering in black culture and focuses on the visual expression of that power. Featured artists include Thomas Askew, Sheila Pree Bright, F. Holland Day, Lola Flash, Charles "Teenie" Harris, Mikalene Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Carla Williams, and many more.

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.
REFRAMING "BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL," a lecture by Deborah Willis: Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m.

"Posing Beauty in African American Culture" is curated by Deborah Willis and organized by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions, Pasadena, California. The Museum enthusiastically acknowledges support from the Wish Foundation and the Lubo Fund.
