WRITERS: photographs by Nancy Crampton
Schatten Gallery
Featuring work by: Nancy Crampton

Exhibition: Mon, Mar 26, to Fri, Nov 2 2012

WRITERS features 50 photographs by Nancy Crampton of authors from a range of genres including poets, playwrights, novelists, activists, and journalists paired with texts from each on the craft of writing. Photographs include Margaret Atwood, W.H. Auden, James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Seamus Heaney, Barbara Kingsolver, Norman Mailer, Toni Morrison, Salman Rushdie, Maurice Sendak, Anne Sexton, Gloria Steinem, Robert Penn Warren, Eudora Welty, Kevin Young, and new U.S. Poet Laureate, Natasha Trethewey.

Since the early 1970s hundreds of book jackets and magazine articles have featured photographs by Crampton, the official photographer of the Unterberg Poetry Center at the 92nd Street Y in New York City famous for its literary readings.

In conjunction with Crampton’s photographs, exhibition curators Julie Delliquanti and Elizabeth Chase have invited members of the Emory community to curate materials from the Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library relating to many of the authors whose photographs are on view.

The exhibition highlights Emory as a place that celebrates authors and fosters a writing community — a community that is broadly conceived and includes writers on campus, those they bring to campus, and the Library as a place for the study of writers and writing.

Relative Connections: New Work by Stephen Marc
Emory Visual Arts Gallery
Featuring work by: Stephen Marc

Opening Reception: Thu, Sep 27, 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Stephen Marc is a contemporary American griot who uses photography to construct thematic mélanges of metaphor and memory. He is a digital montage artist whose work provides a visual interpretation of American history with an emphasis on the black experience. His images weave more than 500 years of African American life, history and culture into a digital quilt comprised of family snapshots, photographs of historical sites, documents and other remnants alongside modern cultural references. Woven together, Marc’s images create powerful narratives that obviate the boundaries of time and space, which converge to produce moving and evocative commentaries.

Marc’s work has been published in numerous books and publications, and in three monographs, including his most recent, Passage on the Underground Railroad. He has been awarded the Aaron Siskind Foundation Fellowship and the Visual Arts Fellowship in Photography, and he received the Elizabeth and Mallory Factor Prize in 2009. Marc is a tenured professor at Arizona State University.

Exhibition: Wed, Sep 19, to Sat, Dec 8 2012

Relative Connections: New Work by Stephen Marc

Stephen Marc will present new work at the Visual Arts Gallery on Emory’s main campus and concurrently at the Catherine Hunt Gallery in Candler Hall at Emory’s Oxford College.
