Affection for Xinjiang
Deans Hall Gallery, Building SA, Georgia Perimeter College
Featuring work by: Yan Li (curator), Huo Wei, Chen Yuan-ming

Exhibition: Sat, Sep 1, to Wed, Oct 31 2012

Two photographers look at different aspects of Xinjiang China. The Kirghiz falcons and the 3000-year-old cottonwoods are explored. Chen Yuan-ming explores a thrilling "ground war" was held in Sumutashi Township, the "falcon town" of Akqi County in Xinjiang, China. Falcon domestication of Kirghiz tribe has a long history, and now Akqi County retains approximately 2000 falcons and large birds of prey. Photographer Huo Wei focuses on that which is the most keenly felt as the apocalypse of every religion - life and death. But when one sees those intertwined cottonwoods, living and dead, new young shoots emerge from the dead, only this rebirth of things is of the highest standard, and all individuals seem to pale in comparison. Ah! Cottonwoods are said to live for three thousands years, to stand three thousand more after their death, and to remain unchanged upon the ground for three thousand more after having fallen. How grand!

Presented by High Noon Culture.

Falling Shadows
Java Monkey
Featuring work by: Ronald Nuse

Exhibition: Sat, Sep 29, to Sat, Nov 3 2012

The series Falling Shadows explores the hidden mystery of nature. At first glance, the images seem to be traditional landscape photographs that use leaves, branches, bark, sky, earth, and water to record a place and time. However, at second glance each image hints at another dimension not usually seen. These dual dimensions—normal reality and something else—reveal a mystery in each scene that we suspect is always there but which we do not normally experience.

The various photographs that compose each image are taken with the final result in mind. Using photo editing software, multiple photographs are intentionally combined into one. During this process, random visual happenings can take place which enhance the final result. This visual serendipity is similar to what happens in some traditional printmaking methods. Unlike some altered photographs, these images are not meant to trick or fool the viewer; in fact, the changes are readily apparent.

Photographs in this series were taken in the Atlanta area and at Georgia and California coastal locations. The main “subject” of these images is the mysterious dimension of nature that continuously pours forth for us to enjoy.

Pillow Talk
Rose Squared Gallery & Framing
Featuring work by: Carolyn Meltzer

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 13, to Sat, Nov 24 2012

Photography that reminds us that we are nothing more than a part of this world and not necessarily its master. Carolyn Meltzer creates dynamic images of nature that capture what few may notice. Her work has been featured in multiple venues in the Atlanta area.

Meltzer’s work was recently showcased in a one-woman exhibit entitled “Consider the Dew Drop,” at Rose Squared Gallery in Decatur. One of the show’s pieces, “Watercolour” received an Honorable Mention in the 2012 Women in Photography International Competition. Her ACP solo exhibit, “Pillow Talk,” features new works emphasizing vibrant, close-up, and often abstract and insular views of the natural world.

Meltzer’s photography is digital, takes advantage of only natural light, and is printed on archival watercolor paper, which further enhances its realistic and simultaneously surrealistic qualities.
