Graffiti: From Street to Studio
Wing & A Prayer Studio
Featuring work by: Corinne Adams

Exhibition: Wed, Oct 3, to Fri, Oct 5 2012

We are surrounded by graffiti. This contemporary art form which employs scribbling, scratching, spray painting and tagging has gone far beyond illicit protest to advertise, tell stories and inspire in every corner of our lives.

These graffiti-inspired mixed media images give me an opportunity to focus on the composition of graffiti as opposed to its message. Instead of paint and markers, I use photography, hand transfers, collage and computer paintbrushes. I add/subtract line and shape -- and push/pull color and texture -- in spontaneous experimentation.

The computer platform offers more freedom than an urban wall as I initiate a call-and-response process that feels intuitive and musical. It is photography -- painting -- printmaking -- graphic design -- and yet none of the above. It is a search for harmony in cacophony with potential for little glories all along the way.

Closing Reception: Fri, Oct 5, 5pm - 8pm

Re-Placing Atlanta
The Atlanta Preservation Center
Featuring work by: John Dean, Jody Fausett, "Panorama" Ray Herbert, David Knox, Sheila Pree Bright, Marcia Vaitsman

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 5, to Fri, Nov 9 2012

Curated by Constance Lewis and Jerry Cullum, Re-Placing Atlanta encourages a closer look at what is historically woven into a contemporary landscape. New or recontextualized work by the artists presents a thoughtfully composed imagining of Atlanta to Atlanta. These artists approach the theme with diverse and distinctively individual aesthetics, materials, and points of view. Whether pursuing culturally and historically significant neighborhoods and landscapes or threatened pieces of Atlanta architecture, each uses the photographic medium as an invitation to contemplate layers of history in the vernacular environment through images that respond to local scenes and structures in which the past is hidden in plain sight.

The curators challenged these well-known photographers to address issues related to, but somewhat outside, their previous subject matter. Their new works investigate the traces of the past in the present—a past that includes the largely forgotten archives of the late Panorama Ray, whose panoramic photographs form a point of departure.

The exhibition, which reflects the Atlanta Preservation Center’s mission of promoting the preservation of Atlanta's historically and culturally significant sites through advocacy and education, is in APC’s Drawing Room Gallery in the 1856 Lemuel P. Grant Mansion.
