Falling Shadows
Java Monkey
Featuring work by: Ronald Nuse

Exhibition: Sat, Sep 29, to Sat, Nov 3 2012

The series Falling Shadows explores the hidden mystery of nature. At first glance, the images seem to be traditional landscape photographs that use leaves, branches, bark, sky, earth, and water to record a place and time. However, at second glance each image hints at another dimension not usually seen. These dual dimensions—normal reality and something else—reveal a mystery in each scene that we suspect is always there but which we do not normally experience.

The various photographs that compose each image are taken with the final result in mind. Using photo editing software, multiple photographs are intentionally combined into one. During this process, random visual happenings can take place which enhance the final result. This visual serendipity is similar to what happens in some traditional printmaking methods. Unlike some altered photographs, these images are not meant to trick or fool the viewer; in fact, the changes are readily apparent.

Photographs in this series were taken in the Atlanta area and at Georgia and California coastal locations. The main “subject” of these images is the mysterious dimension of nature that continuously pours forth for us to enjoy.

Inspiration Echoed
Gallery 100, Woodruff Arts Center
Featuring work by: Carolyn Meltzer, Anne Patterson

Exhibition: Sat, Sep 29, to Sun, Oct 14 2012

Inspiration Echoed is a collaborative work that showcases a series of nature-inspired abstract photographs and ink and watercolor paintings. Photographer Carolyn Meltzer and painter Anne Patterson demonstrate the balance and amplification of each media’s tribute to secret glimpses of the natural world. Indeed, the two artists created the series through an iterative process whereby each was motivated by the work of the other: painting inspired by photograph, and photograph inspired by painting. The work resulting from this bi-directional synergy of ideas and energy is an intimate view of the natural world. Upon experiencing these works the viewer’s understanding of and relationship to nature is deepened.

"Anne’s work so closely resonates with my own perspective on nature and art; the beauty of her watercolors inspire me to make photographs that complement their palette, form, and sense of optimism." – Carolyn Meltzer

"Carolyn’s photographs deepen my own connection to nature. They inspire me to move beyond sight and to paint the sounds, feelings and smells of the natural world." -Anne Patterson
