Inside the Outsider
Mason Murer Fine Art
Featuring work by: Jess Dugan, Natan Dvir, Michael Grecco, Jennifer Greenburg, Amos Mac, Rania Matar, Constanza Piaggo, Bill Steber, Brian Charles Steel, Jeffrey Whettstone

Exhibition: Fri, Sep 21, to Sat, Nov 3 2012

Inside the Outsider is a series of portraits by various established photographic artists, which explores the relationship between feelings of being an outsider and our own uniqueness. Our need for acceptance often overrides our need for individuality, and this series describes how we sublimate our true selves into someone we believe that society will reward, but our true self is still inside co-existing its subjugating replacement. The series also explores how these momentary emotions are forever captured in the static world of the photograph. The objectivity of the camera adds another layer of distance between the subject, the photograph, and the viewer. The camera captures light reflected into its lens without emotion, intent, or prejudice. The work also comments on the disconnection between the feeling of being an outsider and the physical distance between a person and other people. A person can feel like an outsider in a crowd just as easily as he or she could while physically isolated. Inside the Outsider was curated by Atlanta-based artist Brian Charles Steel.

Impaired Perceptions
Mason Murer Fine Art
Featuring work by: Brian Charles Steel

Exhibition: Fri, Sep 21, to Sat, Nov 3 2012

Atlanta based artist Brian Charles Steel created a series of black and white photographic portraits that deal with socially constructed identity and perceptions commonly had of physically impaired people. Through this body of work Steel explores the relationship between an assumed normality and the prescribed notions that are often had of others. Steel uses direct eye contact and tenebrism to challenge the viewer to see each person as an individual. His work challenges notions from the work of Diane Arbus, and refutes the misguided concept that some people are “freaks.” He uses chiaroscuro created by Rembrandt lighting to show each person’s beauty in a traditional portrait style to emphasize that physical ability should not determine how one fits into society.

Gabriel Benzur

The Geometric Landscape
Alan Avery Art Company
Featuring work by: Gabriel Benzur

Exhibition: Fri, Sep 21, to Sat, Oct 27 2012

Internationally acclaimed architectural and interior commercial photographer Gabriel Benzur makes his fine art debut. "I was blown away when he brought in his portfolio," states Alan Avery. "I have known him for 25 years and have worked with him professionally, but I had no idea that he created such beautiful fine art photographs. I immediately asked him if he would join our stable of artists. Finding out that he also was a master wood turner was icing on the cake."

A native Atlantan, Benzur has been a photographer for nearly 50 years. This exhibition features photographs Benzur has taken during his travels. Capturing a mix of man-made structures among rural surroundings, Benzur creates a tension with the juxtaposition of geometric forms within nature. However seemingly incongruous, these elements come together with the artist’s clean, balanced compositions.

Benzur's wood turned vessels compliment the basic elements and themes in his photography. Like the industrial structures, Benzur has formed the wood; yet, the organic lines of the vessels contrast with his photographs' sharp angles. The use of both media - photography and sculpture - emphasizes his desire to represent the beauty of nature, as it is manipulated by man.
