Exhibition: Wed, Oct 17, to Sat, Dec 1 2012

In these structural portraits, reminiscent of Bernd and Hilla Becher's black and white industrial topologies, Whitney explores the anatomy of telecommunication towers and their relationship to the landscape, and thus our technological culture.

Whitney’s documents of the delicate lattice-worked towers, each a totemic formal portrait printed directly from negative in extreme verticality, include the most striking of the analogue and digital TV, radio and cell phone structures that punctuate the rural horizon. Shooting with a 4x5 analog camera and printing digitally as a negative, Whitney brings out the "personalities" of the towers.

The subjects radiate a lonely presence, nostalgic and dated in their appearance - cultural dinosaurs - reminiscent of the time when digital communication was new and magical. These towers point toward the dreams of another era, not long gone, ciphers of the rapidity of technological change.
