Exhibition: Thu, Sep 6, to Mon, Oct 15 2012

Following his 2012 exhibition at the High Museum and subsequent publication, Up and Down Peachtree, world renowned Magnum photographer Parr offers unseen Atlanta images and a concise career survey: from his nostalgic black & whites of the Seventies through his current color work, which began in 1982.

Parr's chromatically charged images describe the distanced, impersonal world that is developing in the wake of the Internet, video and cultural acquisitiveness. The work is primarily shot at close range, with a jarring macro lens and daytime flash. Subjects are caught in the act of sharing space and materials but not engaging with one another. This smartly comments on how physical proximity with its inferred closeness no longer guarantees interpersonal concern or exchange.

Focusing on Western society’s preoccupations - food, entertainment and relationships - Parr challenges our cultural definition of high and lo by using kitsch colors, patterns, and lifestyle choices in the careful compositions, camera angle and lighting that historically connote aesthetic value. Parr manages to create photographs that are both documents and aesthetic objects, moving this art form from reportage to metaphor.
