Abstraction Medium
Mason Murer Fine Art
Featuring work by: Margaret Hiden, Rachel Speed, Marcia Vaitsman

Exhibition: Fri, Sep 16, to Fri, Oct 14 2011

Abstraction Medium reveals the ancestral origins of the photo (light) graphic (print) process, in which light, a high ephemeral element, is captured and stored on a single form.

Temporal elements are present in the work of Margaret Hiden, who shows decay, chemical reactions and the transformation of photo-based materiality. Marcia Vaitsman archives time-based information from the media (as light) into one single frame. Rachel Speed experiments with creating imagery of the mysterious psyche, interpreted through introverted shadowy forms on lightboxes. All works engage the viewer in situations that are not to be seen with naked eye, challenge our perception of time and the identity of photography as the medium of truth. Photography can show us the loops and gaps in the perception of what we call reality. However, these abstract photos do not deny reality. They touch intricate situations without the illusion that the image itself can be the ultimate description of the reality we are trying to understand.

“Everything represented in these images actually occurred, but, not necessarily simultaneously. We have deliberately chosen a medium, namely photography, recognized for its ability to capture a “precise moment" in time, to explore the possibilities of our interaction with the relativity of time and space.
