Exhibition: Fri, Oct 7, to Thu, Nov 17 2011

Curator: Liu Shuyong
Produced by Yan Li

This exhibition consists of works from six photographers of Lishui City in China’s Zhejiang Province. The six photographers each chose to capture and record different aspects of life in the region: portraits of local people, small villages near the city, traditional crafts, daily life, corridor bridges, and working tools.

With China’s large-scale expansion and the rapid advance of urbanization, these poetic pastoral mountain scenes and cultural landscapes showing productivity in simple village life are now rapidly vanishing. Therefore, these six photographers, as ordinary citizens with a common point of view, express their frustration and disillusionment in the face of this sudden new reality. When these landscapes and this vibrant and vivid group of people have become only a memory, perhaps only these images, at some unknown moment in the future, will be able to evoke our shared cultural past.

ACP Collaboration Presents: Christopher Phillips
Savannah College of Art and Design - Atlanta

Other: Thu, Oct 13, 7pm - 8pm

Christopher Phillips, Curator, International Center of Photography, presents Recent Experimental Photography and Video in China.

A burst of new photo and video work involving unusual experimental processes has appeared in China in recent years. This presentation will consider some of the most interesting work in this direction, by artists including Miao Xiaochun, Zhou Xiaohu, Song Dong and Cao Fei, among others.

Christopher Phillips has been curator at the International Center of Photography in New York City since 2000. In 2004, he and Wu Hung of the University of Chicago organized the first major U.S. exhibition of Chinese contemporary photography, Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China.

In recent years he has curated such exhibitions as Atta Kim: On-Air (2006), Shanghai Kaleidoscope (2008), Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan (2008) and Wang Qingsong: When Worlds Collide (2011). He has also served as a member of the curatorial team that organized the 2003, 2006 and 2009 editions of the ICP Triennial of Contemporary Photography and Video. In addition, he is an adjunct faculty member at New York University, where he teaches classes in the history and criticism of photography.

The lecture is a collaboration between SCAD Atlanta and ACP.

This event is free and open to the public.

Lucinda Bunnen

The Master, The Teachers, and The Students - Photography Today
The Hudgens Center for the Arts
Featuring work by: Lucinda Bunnen

: Thu, Oct 13, 6pm - 8pm

The Master: Lucinda Bunnen
In her artist's statements for the two collections displayed in this exhibit, Bunnen states that she will often "let go of my preconceptions and let chance and intuition take over. Being stuck with what you know often keeps you from seeing what you don’t know. With no premeditation, spontaneity can take over, which is the keystone of my best work." For the H2O All About Water collection, Bunnen focused her keen eye and artist's perceptions on a pond that others perceived as 'sick,' and discovered a wealth of beauty. Similarly, in the Mexico collection, Bunnen turned her eye and open mind to the colorful exteriors of buildings in that country and unveils the abstract beauty in their surfaces.

The Teachers: Bruce Bowman, Alexandra Kates and Becky Raffalovich
This three-man exhibit features works by Gwinnett County photography teachers, Cory Bolt, Becky Raffalovich and Breyon Willis, in an educational exhibit showcasing alternative photographic processes.

The Students: 7th Annual Shuttersense Exhibit
A 'lightly juried' exhibit of photographic works, this annual competition is open to Gwinnett County student photographers in both public and private schools.
