Nationally recognized fine art photographer Benita Carr, leads a 2-day workshop (Sat/Sun) focusing on creating portraiture using the body and nude as an expressive tool to convey an idea, emotion and sense of inner being. The goal is to find and render a more complex visual dynamic than just pure shape and form, conveying a story about the interiority of the person that wears it. Various camera techniques, photographic strategies, and locations will be demonstrated and explored in order to go beyond the classical nude study and into the realm of visual narrative. $575. Includes model fees, Dinner & Dialogue with Susan Todd-Raque, and lunch Saturday & Sunday.

Dinner & Dialogue with Susan Todd-Raque

Susan Todd-Raque, well-known independent curator, scholar, writer, lecturer and critic on art history and the photographic arts, gives a kickoff Dinner & Dialogue presentation Friday evening with a survey and discussion of portraiture and the nude in photographic history. Dinner follows at the Hil restaurant. $25. lecture only, $42. prix fixe dinner begins at 5:45pm at Serenbe's Hil restaurant.

Workshop: Sat, Oct 9, 9am - 5pm

Learn step by step how to print your B&W digital images for museum collections (or just for your own living room) with master digital printer Mark Maio, founder of Digital Imaging Institute for Science and Medicine. Participants in this workshop will learn how to craft B&W photographic prints with a classic fine-art aesthetic, using digital tools and the Piezography printing process. This course will address input procedures, both capture and scanning, color/tone management, monitors, the Piezography ink system, printing papers, and how this all applies to museum quality, fine art digital B&W output. Knowledge of Photoshop required. (Limit 12)

$195. Includes all materials and lunch at the Blue-Eyed Daisy Bakeshop.

Call For Entries: Sat, Oct 16, 8am - 2:30pm

Join us for Serenbe Photography Center's 1st Annual Photography Open competition, in scavenger hunt format! Individuals, teams of friends as well as photography clubs and other groups are invited to compete. Assignments for the hunt will be creative and challenging (and secret til the last moment!). Test your skills with your friends and colleagues! Photographers will shoot during the morning, with a panel of 5 professional photographers reviewing entries and selecting winners. Full presentation of entries, from the serious to the humorous, and trophy awards will be presented after lunch.

Entry fee: $25 per photographer or $50 per team (up to 5 photographers per team) -- no fee for just coming by to watch the fun!

Workshop: Sat, Oct 23, to Sun, Oct 24 2010

Work with master B&W printer and fine art photographer Frank Hunter in this hands-on two-day workshop, exploring the fine Platinum-Palladium print. Hunter works with images from both traditional negatives and digital files, covering optimal capture techniques, making and/or converting to high quality digital negatives for large print sizes, coating, drying and properly exposing paper to create a museum-quality, heirloom platinum/palladium print of your image. Each student leaves class with at least one fine art platinum/palladium print of their work. (limit 8)

$550.00 includes all platinum/palladium printing materials for students and lunch both days.

Public Art and Photography: a workshop and panel discussion

Workshop: Sat, Oct 23, 9:30am - 12pm

How can you, as a photographer, undertake a public art project? Or how do you, as a commissioning organization, think about photography as a public art medium?

Join us for a presentation of local, national and international public art projects – both temporary and long-term – which incorporate lens-based art in innovative ways. A visual presentation of traditional and non-traditional approaches to public art practice and photography will be followed by a panel discussion among photographers, artists who use photography, curators, fabricators and administrators. Learn about some of the many opportunities, resources, materials and vendors available to photographers in the public art field.

Free workshop, open to photographers and artists of all levels of experience, arts organizations, and anyone with a general interest in the field (reservations required by October 21). Followed by networking and optional box lunch.

Workshop: Fri, Oct 29, to Sun, Oct 31 2010

Accomplished documentary and editorial photographer JD Scott explores the small, historic African American communities of Pinpoint and Sandfly near Savannah, Georgia, currently at risk from regional growth and development pressures. After meeting and talking to many members of this special heritage community, JD Scott works with students in real world assignment settings with community leaders and other residents to create meaningful photographic images that tell the story of people and place. These photographs will record and preserve the cultural heritage of Pinpoint and Sandfly, many of whose residents trace their ancestry through Georgia's coastal Gullah/Gechee culture. Students' photographs may be selected for use by Georgia Conservancy to advocate for the protection of these communities or in a documentary photography exhibit. This is an SPC "Eye on the World" workshop, offered in partnership with Georgia Conservancy's Blueprints for Successful Communities Program. (Limit 8)

Essick shares his approach to bringing a compelling story home in images, from becoming educated about the natural and cultural details of the landscape to technical photographic expertise - all a part of making a meaningful shot under assignment conditions. This workshop is a part of SPC's "Eye on the World" series, and your photographs could be selected to help protect and preserve the little-known beauty of the Chattahoochee River corridor south of Atlanta.
