Bob Kolbrener . . . Picturing the West
Lumière
Featuring work by: Bob Kolbrener

Exhibition: Wed, Jul 14, to Sat, Sep 25 2010

Photographs from four decades recording the majesty of the American West by Bob Kolbrener of Carmel, California. Complementing the remarkable Ansel Adams exhibition’s September opening at the Booth Museum of Western Art, in Cartersville, GA.

His subjects …from landscapes to portraits …from symbols of man encroaching on nature to humorous signage …are all carefully and thoughtfully executed. A show with Brett Weston in Los Angeles over 35 years ago launched his work. Since then, it has been exhibited throughout the United States as well as in Austria, China, Indonesia and Japan.

“Kolbrener stands apart because his photographs have a rare technical perfection—every print is ideal and masterful in light, tone, cropping and consistency.” - James D. Burke, Director, Saint Louis Art Museum

Sekaer, born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1901, immigrated to the United States in 1918. After successfully operating a printing business in New York City producing posters, advertisements and window displays, he enrolled in the Art Students League in 1929 to study painting.

By 1934 Sekaer had left painting behind to study photography with Berenice Abbott. Through his friendship with Walker Evans he secured contracts from 1936 to 1943 to work on assignment as a photographer for various government agencies.

“Sekaer’s photographs show an outsider’s objectivity and detachment coupled with an insider’s commitment and concern for the subject.” - Julian Cox, Curator of the High Museum of Art’s exhibition: Signs of Life, Photographs by Peter Sekaer.

Unrehearsed Perfection - An Exhibit of Portraits, Given
Pace Academy
Featuring work by: Gary Gruby

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 1, to Fri, Oct 29 2010

This exhibition of photographs by Gary Gruby touches those perfect moments when a person "gives" a portrait to an artist in an unrehearsed, unplanned and unscripted way. Gary Gruby's photographs in this exhibit celebrate those moments. They are honest, open and surprising. These portraits have a geographical range that encompasses Gruby's expansive backyard, from the few students of the "Island School" on Cumberland Island, through families in Atlanta, and the documentation of three decades of residents in Senoia, Georgia - in an award winning series titled "Portrait of Senoia." Mr. Gruby photographed and donated over 44 archival black and white prints that are part of the Senoia Area Historical Society's permanent photography collection. Artists are put on this world to see particular things, share particular thoughts and reflect beauty in their art, and do so in a fun way. Come, take a journey and view the received gifts of "Unrehearsed Perfection" in Pace Academy's Fine Arts Center in October.
