Fantastic Plastic
Jennifer Schwartz Gallery
Featuring work by: Corinne Adams, Jan Fields, Mary Anne Mitchell, Dorothy O'Connor, Christian Bradley West

: Fri, Oct 15, 7pm - 10pm

Plastic cameras, also known as toy cameras, are simple, inexpensive film cameras made almost entirely of plastic. Many were made to be given away as novelties or prizes. The Diana, an inexpensive 1960’s box camera from Hong Kong, is typically the camera most identified as a toy camera. Other cameras, such as the Chinese-made Holga, while originally intended as inexpensive mass-market cameras, have also become associated with the term. Due to their low-cost construction, plastic cameras suffer from light leaks and soft focus. The images they produce are characterized by blurring, vignetting, and distortion. These very limitations, however, have made them a valuable tool for some photographic artists, who have used these cameras to produce unique and distinctive works of art. This exhibition pairs these interesting cameras with some of the region’s most accomplished photographic artists. The result is an eclectic collection of images, each characteristic of the peculiarities of the camera, but also true to the artistry and aesthetic vision of each photographer.
