Africa's History in a Name
Level 2 Gallery | Robert W. Woodruff Library
Featuring work by: Images courtesy of The National Archive, UK

Exhibition: Sat, Aug 28, to Sun, Feb 13 2011

Rare photographs of Africans freed from slaving vessels, alongside nineteenth-century registers documenting liberated Africans' names, accentuate the mysteries surrounding the individuals and identities of people forced into the slave trade. These images are featured as part of the African Origins Portal (www.african-origins.org), an online project to engage public participation in reconstructing the origins of Africans in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, one name at a time. Visitors are invited to explore (and answer) the questions researchers ask as they piece together these missing histories.

Hours: Library galleries are open during regular library hours. Please call or check website prior to your visit, as hours vary throughout the year.

Other: Wed, Nov 10, 5pm - 7pm

Africa's History in a Name | The African Origins Portal www.african-origins.org

Attend a demonstration of the African Origins portal and discussion of how public suggestions will help scholars discover the likely African origins of millions of individuals transported in the nineteenth-century trans-Atlantic slave trade. African Origins team members (lead investigator and Emory University professor David Eltis, project manager Liz Milewicz, and diaspora liaison Nafees Khan) will be on hand to talk about their roles in the project and answer questions.
