CONTEMPORARY WOMEN: Self Reflections
Featuring work by: Talia Azure, Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn, Emily Elkind, Rachel Evans, Katharine Hartwig Dahl, Erin Palovick
Exhibition: Tue, Aug 18 to Fri, Oct 23 2009
What defines a woman of the twenty-first century? Rachel Evans is an Atlanta based artist and a SCAD-Atlanta graduate student who has explored such questions in her collaborative and community-oriented art endeavors during the past five years. Within our diverse society one common thread all people share is the impulse for creative expression. Working in collaboration with a variety of women with mental and physical disabilities, Ms. Evans’ goal is to share the stories of women who face the challenge of living with disability, and to raise public awareness in the community. Each participating artist creates a collaborative, mixed-media self-portrait, utilizing acrylics on canvas in combination with photographic processes. Each artist will also have the opportunity to create a statement to accompany her completed piece. This exhibit will challenge viewers to investigate their personal views and beliefs concerning women in American society, and the definition of disability in our culture. Art patrons will be offered insight into the lives, struggles and achievements of women with disabilities. The individual artists will have an opportunity to share their stories and creativity.

: Wed, Sep 9, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
This exhibition explores the complicated practice of black women disguising themselves as well as the historic trend of others camouflaging themselves as black women. It is based on the premise that people manipulate their outward appearance for many reasons including: to gain access that they would not otherwise have, mimic, deflect attention, or garner confidential information. The project also surmises that artists incorporate the practice of disguise as a critical strategy to carry out or debunk cultural traditions, confront or reinforce stereotypes, explore fetishes, and challenge sociocultural norms.
"Undercover" considers the reasons and ramifications of disguise and the multiple implications it has on race and gender. It examines seemingly disparate types of disguise including, self-portraiture, cross-dressing, and blackface performance. Featuring a range of media including painting, video, and photography, "Undercover" investigates the multi-layered strategies for and outcomes of disguise. While it includes works by well-known artists including Lorraine O'Grady, Cindy Sherman, Lorna Simpson, Doris Ulmann, and James VanDerZee, it also introduces promising emerging and mid-career artists such as Renée Cox, Lalla Essaydi, Ellen Gallagher, Myra Greene, Lyle Ashton Harris, Lauren Kelley, Kalup Linzy, Nandipha Mntambo, Magdalene Odundo, Berni Searle, and many others.

Palimpsest Portraits Neil Fried and Monica Duncan
Featuring work by: Monica Duncan, Neil Fried
Exhibition: Thu, Sep 10 to Sat, Oct 17 2009
Neil Fried (Atlanta) and Monica Duncan (San Diego) present Palimpsest Portraits, a video project using a technique the artists have termed ‘encaustic video’. The traditionally linear format of the video process is altered by Duncan and Fried as they use a process wherein real-time image processing siphons off portions of the video stream into a reservoir of computer memory that either fades of fixes, according to degrees of luminosity in the scene. Like the palimpsest, some areas must be rubbed out to admit the new, but are never totally lost. The video portraits to be presented in Palimpsest Portraits are the initial stage of larger project that will culminate in a video piece wherein the characters inhabit architectural forms in site-specific, interactive performance in a city that resembles Atlanta.

Ground Score
Featuring work by: Bill Daniel
Exhibition: Fri, Sep 18 to Sat, Oct 31 2009
Ground Score traces the unpredictable course of a self-taught artist who was originally turned on to the practice of documentation while participating in the skate/punk scene of Austin in the early 1980s. Included in this trip are records from a 20-year obsession with traditional rail graffiti, a bike messenger’s eye view of San Francisco’s graffiti that presaged a movement called “The Mission School”, and a range of large-format work resulting from a science and myth-based appetite for apocalyptic landscapes.
Bill Daniel’s work is traditional silver-based and represents his conviction and dedication to pre/post digital photography. He is also known for his filmmaking, “Who is Bozo Texino?” and is the author of a book on rail graffiti, “Mostly True.”

Jefferson Pinder's "Lazarus"
Featuring work by: Alejandro Aguilera, Kojo Griffin, Jefferson Pinder
Exhibition: Fri, Sep 18 to Sat, Oct 31 2009
Washington DC-based video artist Jefferson Pinder exhibits his newest performance video, “Lazarus”. Pinder presents visually engaging video work as a form of quiet activism. The human experience is revealed as a poetic journey and beauty is often found in the mudane. Pinder’s work was most recently featured in the “After 1968” exhibition at the High Museum of Art in 2008.
In “Lazarus”, a huddled mass of pedestrians spring into action to collectively move a seemingly immobile vehicle. This impromptu tribe of activists forms an intense juggernaut as Pinder guides the force from the seat of the rusty powdered blue car.
This video piece is his latest installment of the Inertia Cycle series in which Pinder documents intense physical tasks as an abstract metaphor for social struggle.

Combined with the power of the cell phone's instant abilities, this project, co-produced by Christian Bradley-West and Susan Todd-Raque, gives a forum for artists to speak visually in a way people have never been able to do so until now. The artistic process for these living diaries began in June 2009 and continued for 8 weeks. Participating artists are from across the U.S. and Europe.

Ephemeral Musings: Work from and Inspired by the Afromestizo Communities of LaCosta Chica, Mexico

Artist Lecture: Sun, Sep 20, 2pm - 5pm

Exhibition: Sun, Sep 20 to Sun, Nov 15 2009
Ephemeral Musings: Work from and Inspired by the Afromestizo Communities of LaCosta Chica, Mexico
Wendy Phillips' conceptual work is informed and inspired by the ethnographic research project she has been doing with women of African and North American indigenous descent in the communities of the coastal states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, Mexico.
La Limpia Project was inspired by what she learned about Afromestizo women’s conceptualization of illness and their rituals related to healing. In this series, her body is the location of the rituals, and her photographs include the ritual objects and symbols the women use in their traditional practices.
La Sombra Series refers to the traditional Afromestizo belief that illnesses and instances of spiritual disharmony and disequilibrium occur when an aspect of an individual called La Sombra, (also known as the soul, or shadow) becomes lost or endangered. The images also represent her musings about the symbols that represent the feminine archetype.
La Costa Chica Series includes images made in the Afromestizo community of Juchitan, in the state of Guerrero, Mexico.
