Juxtaposed Generations: Images From Behind & In Front of the Lens

Gabriella Oviedo’s intimate images of her grandmother displays the vulnerability and often unseen angle that aging generally yields, while David Foster captures Ms. Oviedo using shadows and light to demonstrate how nature and the youthful form can be interwoven to create new landscapes. This juxtaposition of different styles of photography and generations lends a unique perspective on the cultural biases associated with beauty and aging in an honest and engaging manner.

Film Screening: Sat, Oct 10, to Sun, Oct 11 2009

Shot in high-definition digital video, Bernat, poet Alice Lovelace, bandoneon player Osvaldo Barrios and Julian Ingram perform a wistful narrative about lost love and an illusive reunion. “Wishes” includes the participation of the Tango Junkies. Directed by Blake Williams.

Photographer Jerry Siegel documents the Black Belt region of the American South with an unflinching gaze. From decaying urban areas to backwater diners and pool halls, Siegel exposes the cultural values of a region characterized by extreme poverty, rural exodus, and community pride. His determined eye reveals unexpected depths in his subjects, inviting viewers to ‘come and set a spell’ in the company of his images. With compassion and without haste, he captures the essence and extremes of the American South.

IN THE THICKET OF IT
whitespace
Featuring work by: Sally Heller

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 16, to Sat, Nov 21 2009

Installation artist and photographer, Sally Heller, will create a landscape based on a thicket of trees. Made out of consumer detritus, low end products we use and discard, this landscape will examine the idea of density and how it relates to mass market culture. The thicket, composed of synthetic materials, reveals the glut of consumer waste while emptier spaces reveal nature's lingering frailty and impermanence.

With this installation is a series of photographs based on previous installations. Resembling abstract paintings, these works capture the energy of the installations yet have their own identities; the images are taken in mirrored mylar which distorts and alters their reality.

Exhibition in conjunction with i45: The Galleries of Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward, and Little Five.
