CONTEMPORARY WOMEN: Self Reflections
Featuring work by: Talia Azure, Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn, Emily Elkind, Rachel Evans, Katharine Hartwig Dahl, Erin Palovick
Exhibition: Tue, Aug 18 to Fri, Oct 23 2009
What defines a woman of the twenty-first century? Rachel Evans is an Atlanta based artist and a SCAD-Atlanta graduate student who has explored such questions in her collaborative and community-oriented art endeavors during the past five years. Within our diverse society one common thread all people share is the impulse for creative expression. Working in collaboration with a variety of women with mental and physical disabilities, Ms. Evans’ goal is to share the stories of women who face the challenge of living with disability, and to raise public awareness in the community. Each participating artist creates a collaborative, mixed-media self-portrait, utilizing acrylics on canvas in combination with photographic processes. Each artist will also have the opportunity to create a statement to accompany her completed piece. This exhibit will challenge viewers to investigate their personal views and beliefs concerning women in American society, and the definition of disability in our culture. Art patrons will be offered insight into the lives, struggles and achievements of women with disabilities. The individual artists will have an opportunity to share their stories and creativity.
