Marina Abramović
SCAD Atlanta
Featuring work by: Marina Abramović

Exhibition: Tue, Oct 4, to Tue, Nov 1 2011

The Marina Abramović exhibition features three videos and an iconic series of photos that span the time from her first performance to her most recent works. This intimate exhibition chronicles the evolution of her performances: from her extremely physical early work to her more recent work exploring immateriality and the spiritual. Together the works showcase Abramović’s role as a pioneer in the use of performance as a visual art form.

Marina Abramović attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. She pioneered the use of performance as a visual art form. Abramović presented her work at institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York, 2010; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 2004; State Historical Museum, Moscow, Russia, 2004; Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, Japan, 2004; and Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France, 1990. She received an Honorary Doctorate from The Art Institute of Chicago in 2004 and earned the 2005-06 Best Exhibition of Time-Based Art award by the Association of Art Critics. Abramović won the Golden Lion for Best Artist at the 1997 Venice Biennale.

ACP Knowledge Series Presents "To Be Published or Self Publish?"
Portfolio Center
Featuring work by: William Boling, Laura Noel, Mary Virginia Swanson

Book Signing: Wed, Oct 5, 6:30pm - 8pm

Mary Virginia Swanson will be presenting "To be Published, or Self-published?", with special guests Laura Noel, and Bill Boling.

The print-on-demand revolution has opened up new publishing possibilities for photographers; it has never been easier or more affordable to produce and market a book of your photographs. The traditional publishing path has the advantage of a highly specialized team that brings experience with design, production, marketing and distribution systems to the table. In a self-publishing scenario you can create exactly the book you envision, but without the input and expertise of seasoned professionals at a publishing house. Which scenario is best for you?

In this illustrated presentation, Mary Virginia Swanson will discuss both avenues to publishing and help participants determine the pros/cons of each, sharing resources from her recent title with coauthor Darius Himes, Publish Your Photography Book (Princeton Architectural Press, Spring 2011).

Special guest photographer Laura Noel and publisher Bill Boling of Fall Line Press will discuss their journey together in publishing “Free Fall”. Time will be allocated for Q&A with Swanson, Noel and Boling following their presentations.

Gail Cameron: First Row Seat
Rhodes Hall
Featuring work by: Cornell Capa, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Bill Eppridge, Gordon Parks

: Thu, Oct 6, 6pm - 8pm

Gail Cameron worked as a reporter and byline writer at LIFE Magazine between 1956-1965. It was a heady, optimistic and exhilarating time; the Kennedys entered the White House, Lincoln Center opened in New York and the Beatles rocked America. In that pre-digital era, LIFE was the biggest, most successful magazine in the world and LIFE reporters and photographers were given amazing access to the pivotal personalities of the day. Cameron worked with many of the iconic photojournalists of the time --Alfred Eisenstaedt, Cornell Capa, Gordon Parks, Burke Uzzle, Bill Eppridge, Bob Gomel and many others and collected prints from the stories and events they covered.

Some of the most captivating images from this collection will be featured in Freeman's inaugural Photographs and Photobooks auction on October 21, 2011 and will be shown during the presentation. Cameron will relate the stories behind the images, providing a unique, firsthand view of famous figures such as Jackie Kennedy, the Beatles, Leonard Bernstein and Grandma Moses.

"A Celebration of Photography" - Six Southern Viewpoints
The Art House Gallery
Featuring work by: Richie Arpino, Lila Campbell, Diane Kirkland, Kim Painter Chesney, Donna Rosser, Ilia Varcev

: Fri, Oct 7, 6pm - 9pm

Ilia Varcev - "stories from home"
Lila Campbell - "the everyday/everyman"
Diane Kirkland - "magic in the southern landscape"
Richie Arpino - "post 911" and "post Katrina" series
Kim Painter Chesney - "world travels" photography/mixed media
Donna Rosser - "the barefoot photographer"

Ilia Varcev is a local icon (although he protests "I'm not an artist, I just take pictures") - bringing a collection of new stories (Atlanta and native Bulgaria) which capture the spirit of people & place in every frame. Former "Artist in Residence" recipient (Georgia Department of Natural Resources) Diane Kirkland will be exhibiting her famed "Landscapes of Georgia" series. With a camera and a passport, Kim Painter Chesney has people & places from around the globe - which she completes in encaustic/mixed media format - from Hong Kong to England; Thailand to India; Italy to Singapore - a vibrant and energetic shot of our world. "The Barefoot Photographer" (Donna Rosser) is inspired by the usual everyday subject – but it is her unusual interpretation that makes her photos completely her own. Donna’s work is of the moment - free, loose, and intriguing. Lila Campbell (self proclaimed "no-box thinker") takes on people, life, color and imagination through the lens - all with a creative 'wink' at what is all around us. Still-life and commercial photographer Richie Arpino will be unveiling his "post 911" and "post Katrina" photo-journalism series. A story told from his heart and soul, this collection is a departure from his commercial work and we can't wait to unveil.

Deans Hall Gallery, Building SA, Georgia Perimeter College
Featuring work by: Ye Gao-xing, Su Jian, Shen Jian-huang, Wang Peiquan, Pan Shiguo, Zheng Zhong-min

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 7, to Thu, Nov 17 2011

Curator: Liu Shuyong
Produced by Yan Li

This exhibition consists of works from six photographers of Lishui City in China’s Zhejiang Province. The six photographers each chose to capture and record different aspects of life in the region: portraits of local people, small villages near the city, traditional crafts, daily life, corridor bridges, and working tools.

With China’s large-scale expansion and the rapid advance of urbanization, these poetic pastoral mountain scenes and cultural landscapes showing productivity in simple village life are now rapidly vanishing. Therefore, these six photographers, as ordinary citizens with a common point of view, express their frustration and disillusionment in the face of this sudden new reality. When these landscapes and this vibrant and vivid group of people have become only a memory, perhaps only these images, at some unknown moment in the future, will be able to evoke our shared cultural past.
