Unrehearsed Perfection - An Exhibit of Portraits, Given
Pace Academy
Featuring work by: Gary Gruby

Exhibition: Fri, Oct 1, to Fri, Oct 29 2010

This exhibition of photographs by Gary Gruby touches those perfect moments when a person "gives" a portrait to an artist in an unrehearsed, unplanned and unscripted way. Gary Gruby's photographs in this exhibit celebrate those moments. They are honest, open and surprising. These portraits have a geographical range that encompasses Gruby's expansive backyard, from the few students of the "Island School" on Cumberland Island, through families in Atlanta, and the documentation of three decades of residents in Senoia, Georgia - in an award winning series titled "Portrait of Senoia." Mr. Gruby photographed and donated over 44 archival black and white prints that are part of the Senoia Area Historical Society's permanent photography collection. Artists are put on this world to see particular things, share particular thoughts and reflect beauty in their art, and do so in a fun way. Come, take a journey and view the received gifts of "Unrehearsed Perfection" in Pace Academy's Fine Arts Center in October.

Karen Shacham: Couples

Couples is an exhibition of vivid portraits by Atlanta-based artist, Karen Shacham. Her series showcases the dual perspective that informs how queer couples live in the United States. With terms like “gay” and “lesbian” most often used within political and social constructs, society at large tends to overlook the myriad ways in which these couples exist in the day to day.

Discursive Documents: Performing the Catalogue
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia
Featuring work by: Wesley Chenault, Andy Ditzler, Joey Orr

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 2, to Sat, Jan 8 2011

Presented by the artist collective John Q (Wesley Chenault, Andy Ditzler, and Joey Orr), this exhibition explores the idea of discursive documents, a contemporary cataloging practice that takes the forms of printed matter, exhibition, programming and digital scholarship. By creating links between these various forms of documentation, the material itself takes on different forms and occupies different kinds of spaces. What if the catalog were not simply the printed text and image?

"Neorealism" - New Visions from Old Snapshots"
Little Tree Gallery
Featuring work by: Rob Nixon

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 2, to Sun, Oct 31 2010

This exhibit of deconstructed, fragmented, and manipulated found photographs grew as much from Rob Nixon’s work as a writer as from an interest in visual arts. In his plays, Nixon frequently deals with the idea of narrative, how we structure random events into stories through which we seek to impart meaning and order to our lives and the world around us. The snapshot photographer similarly acts as a creator of narrative, choosing what subjects and moments of real life to capture and present a form that can be told/read/seen over and over, not only representing but often superceding the reality on which it's based. Playing off the image's susceptibility to manipulation and falsification, just like the elements in storytelling, these pieces explore how, even in the most casual, mundane snapshot, the choice of framing and the composition within it always implies what has been left out, not seen, not told, not intentionally represented, including what lies outside the frame as well as what has been relegated to the background, the shadows, and the margins in order to privilege the subject—the story—the photographer most wants to capture. And in doing this, new visions emerge from the “facts” of reality.

Urban Living
Gordon Biersch
Featuring work by: Terry Check

: Sat, Oct 2, 6pm - 9pm

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 2, to Sun, Nov 7 2010

Urban Living

I love people …. maybe not people, but the diversity, interaction and emotions of people. Love, suffering, fear, laughter, anger, despair and complacency are powerful, without color or language. Urban Living, a segmented journey through Europe, documents people as themselves without their facades. Look once, you see a picture … look twice, you see the essence of others, and maybe yourself.

Wherever people gather or their memoirs linger behind, Terry strives to capture the moment transcending time and place. His work searches for the individual's meaning of life on earth and thereafter. Noticing what others don’t … reaching without consequences to expand his photography.

New Mixed Media Work by Linda Plaisted & Faryn Davis
Young Blood Gallery & Boutique
Featuring work by: Faryn Davis, Linda Plaisted

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 2, to Sun, Oct 24 2010

Linda Plaisted (Washington, DC) will be showing her Luna Park series with Faryn Davis' (North Carolina) nature-inspired work. Both will be showing their mixed media photography work. Davis' work being hushed and mysterious, powerful and precise, against Plaisted's Luna Park series which is bright and bold, embodying the colors, sights and sounds of the summer carnival, yet still a bit mysterious and bittersweet, shrouded in a sultry haze, like a distant memory of that one certain summer from the past. There is a lot of strict geometry in the photographic accuracy of the roller coaster and ferris wheel angles, but the over-painting is loose and a little wild not unlike an adolescent summer.

‘I’m not an artist, I just take pictures.’ says Bulgarian born Ilia Varcev. ‘I stumble on something and take a picture of it,’ he says, adding that ‘if you want to take pictures you carry a camera and plenty of film.’ A mechanical engineer, Ilia learned photography from helping his older brother work in his home darkroom when the family lived in Czechoslovakia. Escaping the Cold War he made his way to the U.S. in 1966, arriving in Atlanta in 1977 when his car broke down en route to Washington DC. He has been here ever since, carrying that camera.
