Rag and Bone: Of Loss and Desire
5 Continents
Featuring work by: Meg Dreyer

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 1, to Mon, Oct 31 2011

In 2008 I discovered an abandoned homestead in Maine.

When I (finally) climbed in a window to investigate the interior of the house, I was haunted and transfixed by the immediacy of the human lives, long vanished, that had unfolded there. It was as if the people who lived there had just stepped away, their abandoned possessions witness to a rich domestic life I recognized and understood but would never know the particulars of. Who had lived here? Why did they leave? And who had squatted in their wake, adding layers to the detritus of vanished lives? In the end it seemed not to matter. A sense of fragility and loss pervaded the place, the anonymity of human passage through the world a solitary truth that even the comforts of home could not dispel.

Comprising images marking passage, fragility and impending loss, this work grows out of classic themes of vanitas and memento mori long explored in art.

Exhibition: Sat, Oct 1, to Sun, Oct 16 2011

Vargas and Harbin Studio Gallery is a partnership in paint and pixels. Reinaldo Vargas, Cuban American artist, and Charlie Harbin, American photographer, gain inspiration from one another as they continue their quest to create unique and often edgy works.

Seven talented photographers will showcase creative prints -- from abstract to realistic pieces -- at this ACP event. The gallery sits amidst century old buildings, in the middle of downtown old Norcross, about 3 miles from I-85 and Jimmy Carter Blvd.

This exhibition will prove to be one of metro Atlantas' favorite stops on the Atlanta Celebrates Photography 2011 tour. Also participating in ACP in Norcross this year is Kudzu Art Zone, a short (2 block) stroll away, making your trek to Norcross even more rewarding. Not only will the photography be top notch, so are all of our local restaurants! We await your visit!

Charlie Harbin runs Stop the Clock Photo, while Rey Vargas operates Vargas Studio LLC from this joint venture gallery location.

Terry Check ... Retrospective
Central Library of Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System
Featuring work by: Terry Check

Exhibition: Sun, Oct 2, to Fri, Nov 25 2011

The exhibition highlights recent work of noted photographer, Terry Check. His work features several portfolios: Urban Living, Fashion Puppet, Visual Music, Ghost Town and Rural Georgia.

Look once, you see a picture … look twice, you see the essence of others, and maybe yourself. Terry said “I love people …. the diversity, interaction and emotions of people. Love, suffering, fear, laughter, anger, despair and complacency are powerful, without color or language”.

Wherever people gather or their memoirs linger behind, Terry strives to capture the moment transcending time and place. His work explores the meaning of life on earth and thereafter. Noticing what others don’t … reaching with consequences to expand his photography.

"Fly Away"
Pace Academy - Fine Arts Center
Featuring work by: Corinne Adams

Exhibition: Mon, Oct 3, to Mon, Oct 31 2011

The idea of flight inspires. We long to be a bird. We travel into space. We follow a balloon as it floats into the sky. It feels good to plant our feet on the earth and call it home, but it feels even better to soar. With air beneath our feet and open space around us, we get a new perspective on things. We imagine. The 96-foot-long exhibition wall in Pace Academy's Fine Arts Center has inspired me to create an installation piece which is a photographic poem about winged (and other) flights of fancy. I hope that this blend of traditional photography and mixed media imagery - in a fluid collage format - will inspire you to fly away.

Ghost Town
Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech
Featuring work by: Terry Check

Exhibition: Mon, Oct 3, to Fri, Nov 25 2011

Terry Check, a fine art photographer, uncovers buried memoirs in Bombay Beach, CA. Many years ago, two tropical storms struck the Sonoran Desert in California, and turned the Salton Sea upside down including the community of Bombay Beach. Part of the town was either under water or half-buried in mud. Life never returned to normal. A ghost town remains along the beach. Homes were destroyed, family mementos washed away and livelihoods vanished. Wreckage and memories linger for all to wonder in Ghost Town.

Wherever people gather or their memoirs linger behind, Terry strives to capture the moment transcending time and place. His work searches for the individual’s meaning of life on earth and thereafter. Noticing what others don’t … reaching with consequences to expand his photography. In addition to Ghost Town, Terry exhibits other work from several collections.

Exhibition is open from 6 - 9 pm during the performing art shows on 10/7, 10/14, 10/23 and 11/13; and by appointment as listed below.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF RECORD
Arnold Art Gallery
Featuring work by: Ilia Varcev

Exhibition: Mon, Oct 3, to Thu, Oct 27 2011

Bulgarian by birth, Czech educated, but Southern by the grace of God, Ilia Varcev is a photographer of record. Whether dizzying, bucket-crane architectural views of modern skyscrapers, agitated political rallies, exuberant public celebrations, intimate vignettes of his Eastern European homeland, or simply people on the street, Varcev’s photographs internalize reality, providing us a glimpse of structure and meaning in a world in flux. Recent forays into manipulation by the artist play off the veracity of his photographs.
